What to do during the summer

First of all… enjoy yourselves and your English!

The summer break is not meant to create a gap in your English, but to fill it in. Therefore, you have to keep on working, especially reading a lot.

*    Copy a bit of a text written in English for about ten minutes 2-3 times a week.
*    Keep a diary (= keep a written record) of the activities that you do in English.
*    Read aloud in English for about 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a week.
*    Watch as many DVDs, internet clips, TV programmes and videos in English as you can.
*    Read about topics that you like.
*    Make the most of any opportunity to speak English.

Listening

Listen several times to your reader’s CDs.
Surf the web and do listening and reading activities from http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/

Film and Cinema - Quizzes, Games and Activities for English Learners

Obviously, if you watch films and videos in the original version and play with the subtitles, you’ll have fun and learn a lot too.

Speaking

Meet up with your friends and use the English you know. It’s a good practice.
Of course, if you have the possibility, talking with native speakers is very desirable.

However, reading aloud at least 5 minutes a day is always good for you.

So as you can see it’s about reading a lot (and aloud too).

Reading (and vocabulary)

You could read: Anita Stern’s ‘Tales from many lands’, NTC (McGraw Hill).
Or any other that you feel like reading. In fact read as much as you can.

Writing

Write a diary in which you keep record of all the activities you do in English throughout the summer. For example:

Tuesday, 25th of June 2013 ( or Tuesday, 25 June 2013)
Today I watched Three Weddings and a Funeral in English and I understood some bits, mainly because I know the film already. It was difficult but funny. I read aloud in English for 10 minutes from Two Lives and I wrote down four paragraphs.

Tomorrow I’m going to take the book I’m reading in English to the beach. Perhaps and I’ll buy myself a magazine in English, too.

Wednesday, 26th of June 2013
Finally, I didn’t go to the beach yesterday. I felt like going to the cinema. I saw a film in English with subtitles in….
